Chat customisation

NotebookLM allows you to set custom instructions for how the AI should respond within a specific notebook. You can define a conversational goal, voice, or role, such as asking it to act as a marketing strategist or a PhD student.

This feature is universal and available to all NotebookLM users, including those on personal accounts and Workspace editions. It is particularly useful for teams or educators who want a shared notebook to maintain a consistent tone for all collaborators.

Open a notebook and look for the chat panel at the bottom. Click the configuration icon next to the chat input, select Custom from the conversational style options, and enter your instructions in the text box.
